Changes in Your Space Support Changes in Your Life

I was laughing to myself last week as I reached past the newly cleaned winter jacket in my closet for a light weight spring jacket.

The changeable weather of this past month reminds us of the changeable nature of Life. Sometimes we choose change; sometimes we have change thrust upon us.  Sometimes change begins outside of us; sometimes change begins within us. Consciously creating changes in your physical environment gives you a greater sense of choice, control and support.

Wisdom Quote:

“Change has a considerable psychological impact on the human mind. To the fearful it is threatening because it means that things may get worse. To the hopeful it is encouraging because things may get better. To the confident it is inspiring because the challenge exists to make things better.”- King Whitney Jr.

When to make changes in your space?

You know about situations when creating spaces is most obvious: a new home or a new job. Or less obvious life changes: end of a relationship or empty nesting.  Some changes start within: rethinking career and life goals, new fitness and health lifestyle, or a new personal development or spiritual focus in your life.  All of these changes are helped by outward physical supports and reminders to make the most of these changes.

“For the first time in my life I have a home that is just for me. I want to make it the best it can be.”

Fresh Starts

Making changes in your space is especially helpful when the change is out of your control or it is a shift in inner thinking and perceptions that you want to develop and grow.

Declutter to bring in fresh energy.

When you have a new project; whether for business, personal development or personal pleasure; create a space that makes doing that project easier. Rethink how your desk and work storage is laid out. Add appropriate lighting. Place artwork and inspirational items around, like photos of your family or your dream vacation locale, or what the finished project will look like or what you want it to bring to you. Have fun with this. Try a photo of your head “photoshopped” onto the body of a really fit model or celebrity in your exercise area.

If the changes are more inward: you are considering job or career change, or are rethinking your life goals; then create a place where you can just sit and be. Make a quite place for thinking and reflecting. Take time and make a space for the Yin of life: thinking and clarity before the Yang of action. Move a comfortable chair near a window or add good lighting in a quiet room or corner.

Inward changes or shifts especially benefit from hanging pictures that nurture your spirit or remind you of your less tangible goals.

  • Metaphors for this kind of change include a lamp representing clarity or enlightenment.
  • A plant to connect you with Nature and represent growth.
  • Hang a picture of a revered person or place.
  • A butterfly or chambered nautilus shell can represent change from the inside out or the inward journey.

Attach intentions to these outward manifestations of your deepest goals.

If you are able to naturally place these spaces in the parts of the Ba-Gua that represents that part of your life, you get Feng Shui Bonus Points.  If not, it is still good.
